Banjos, harmonicas and stories: Appalachian culture comes alive at Sunny View Elementary

The sound of a harmonica recently filled the air at Sunny View Elementary School, transporting fourth- and fifth-graders into the heart of Appalachian tradition through music, storytelling and the masterful artistry of Johnny Thomas Fowler.

Johnny Thomas Fowler, an award-winning musician and storyteller, brought regional culture to life through performances featuring banjo, harmonica and dulcimer. Fowler is a recipient of South Carolina’s prestigious Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award, which recognizes exceptional contributions to preserving and sharing folk heritage.

The musical residency provided students with arts integration experiences that connected them to Appalachian traditions and regional history. Fowler’s performances combined authentic musical traditions with storytelling that has captivated audiences across the Southeast.

The residency was funded through the Polk County Community Foundation’s unrestricted funds and the Don and Peggy Lyons Fund, enabling all students to participate in the cultural learning experience at no cost to families.

Through Harmonica Harmonies, Sunny View students engaged with regional cultural heritage while developing appreciation for traditional Appalachian music and storytelling arts.
