Chocolate milk mixes help PCHS students learn about solubility

Students in Shannon Haynes’ physical science class at Polk County High School recently took part in a short demonstration to understand various states of solubility.

Class members went through the exercise to show differences in unsaturated, supersaturated and saturated concentrations as well as concentrated versus dilute concentrations.

Students mixed a single spoonful of chocolate milk mix for unsaturated, whatever amount they normally do for saturated and then had a few brave souls try the supersaturated.

The mixed showed what will make solutes dissolve faster – agitation/stirring, surface area/particle size and temperature.
