Hello. This is an automated message from Superintendent Aaron Greene with an update on Coronavirus and our schools. First I want to assure our families and staff that we are in constant communication with our local County officials and state agencies to be sure we have the latest and most accurate information. Polk County Schools must rely on our health officials and their guidance and support as we move forward. I can tell you as of the time of this call there are no confirmed cases of COVID19 in Polk County. In addition I would urge everyone to make sure they are getting information from credible and reputable information sources – the CDC, NC DHHS, and our Polk County Health Department. They are issuing regular communications with updates and advice for citizens and communities. We ask that you please visit www.ncdhhs.gov to review the latest information and recommendations regarding Coronavirus. Please help us remind students to wash their hands frequently, avoid touching their face with their hands, to let someone know if they don’t feel well, and cover their mouths when sneezing or coughing. If you think your child is sick, please keep them at home. We will be monitoring students and staff closely at school as well.
I do have several updates on recent changes that will be taking effect soon. As of midnight tomorrow night, Friday, March 13 the NCHSAA has suspended all school athletic activity for high schools and middle schools until April 6 when they will reassess. Also beginning Monday of next week we are suspending all out-of-county school related travel by students or staff until further notice – this includes field trips, workshops, conferences, state meetings, etc. Some in-county trips and activities will be impacted as well. Access to our students and schools by outside groups, visitors, and volunteers will be restricted and those parties will be notified separately. Otherwise our schools will be operating normally until such time we are advised to change course.
This issue is serious and rightfully concerning to us all. We are doing all we can to stay updated, enact reasonable preventative measures, and respond to directives issued by health officials. We would ask everyone to remain calm as we continue to learn more about the situation and receive updates and advice from state and federal officials. We also urge everyone not to engage in rumor, gossip, or conjecture to avoid spreading false or inaccurate information.
If you have a specific question or concern feel free to contact us at 828-894-3051 and let us know your call is regarding a Coronavirus question or issue. You will either be transferred to someone to help you or we will take your name and number and someone will return your call. We appreciate your patience, support, and understanding during this situation that is constantly evolving. Thank you, and goodnight.
