Polk Central fifth graders study meteorology, climate during Muddy Sneakers outing

It was a cold morning on Thursday, Dec. 5, so Polk Central fifth graders had plenty to notice as gusts of wind chilled them, the sun hid above stratus clouds in the Southwest and the temperature was in the low 40s.

As the wind quieted, the sun came out and the temperature increased; teachers, parents and community chaperones were definitely more comfortable and students were able to see real differences in their weather log data.

Muddy Sneakers instructors used Morse Park in Lake Lure to teach more than 50 students about the tools and methods of meteorology as well as the ways climate is connected to their local environment.
