Polk Central second graders begin westward expansion unit with hands-on art

Second graders in Rachel Culbreth’s class at Polk Central Elementary recently began a new Arts & Letters module on westward expansion with a hands-on art activity.

For their opening lesson, students learned about traditional Native American art and created their own terracotta pinch pots.

The activity gave students an opportunity to work with clay while beginning to explore the cultures and history they will encounter throughout the new module.

By creating the pots themselves, students added a hands-on experience to the reading, discussion and historical learning that will continue as the unit develops.
