Polk County Schools demonstrated excellent academic performance in the 2024-25 school year, earning recognition as one of North Carolina’s top school districts while several individual schools achieved growth milestones.
The district received an overall A grade from Niche.com, reflecting strong performance across multiple categories including academics, teachers, college preparation and administration. Polk County Schools ranked No. 1 among 115 districts statewide in two key categories: Best Places to Teach in North Carolina and Districts with the Best Teachers in North Carolina. The district also earned the No. 2 ranking for Best School Districts in North Carolina.
Individual schools within the district showed strong performance on state accountability measures. Saluda Elementary and Polk Early College both earned A grades on the North Carolina School Performance Grade scale, which evaluates schools based on student achievement and academic growth.
Saluda Elementary achieved an 85.2% achievement score and demonstrated exceptional growth with 86.8% of students making expected progress. The school exceeded growth expectations in all subject areas except mathematics, earning an overall performance score of 86.
Polk County Early College maintained its position as a top-performing school with a 95% achievement score and continued to meet growth expectations across all academic areas. The school’s performance earned it an A grade on the state accountability system.
Several other schools in the district earned C grades, indicating satisfactory performance on state measures. Sunny View Elementary achieved a 62.9% achievement score with 70.5% of students making expected growth, meeting state expectations in all areas except mathematics.
Polk Central showed improvement with 78.4% of students making expected growth, while Polk County Middle achieved a 70.9% growth rate. Both schools met state growth expectations in all areas except mathematics. Tryon Elementary earned a C grade with a 63.2% achievement score, meeting growth expectations in Hispanic and reading categories.
Polk County High School earned a C grade with a performance score of 67, meeting growth expectations for Black, Hispanic and American Indian student populations while working to improve outcomes in other demographic categories.
The strong district performance aligns with statewide improvements in North Carolina education. State data shows students achieved a three-year high in most standardized tests, with the four-year cohort graduation rate reaching 87.7%, the highest in the past decade.
North Carolina’s grading system weights student achievement at 80 percent and academic growth at 20 percent.
