The Birchbark House
Our 5th graders have been reading The Birchbark House and exploring how communities sustain themselves and their cultures. This week, we took that learning off the page and out into the world with a trip to the Schiele Museum in Gastonia!
While there, students learned about the Catawba people and how their community has evolved over time while sustaining its culture. It was a perfect tie-in to our novel, and it was wonderful to watch students make connections between the book and real history right before their eyes.
A HUGE thank you to the Polk County Community Foundation for making this trip possible. Your generous support gave our students an experience they will remember long after the school year ends. We are so grateful!
