Tryon fifth graders continue tradition of decorating town Christmas tree

For more than two decades, fifth graders from Tryon Elementary have been decorating the Christmas tree standing next to Morris the Horse in downtown Tryon.

It’s a tradition started by Clara Rogers, the school’s former art teacher. When Rogers retired, new art instructor Parker Mullinax continued it with her assistance.

Each year, students dedicate several weeks to making ornaments during their art class. This year that culminated with all fifth graders taking a walk from the school to downtown Tryon to decorate the tree.

Tryon Mayor Alan Peoples, the Tryon Police Department and several parent volunteers joined the students in the festive activity.
