Polk Central Elementary launches wildlife study and reading trail

Students at Polk Central Elementary School participated in dual educational initiatives Tuesday, launching the Box Turtle Project and celebrating the opening of a new Literacy Trail on campus.

The Box Turtle Project, conducted in partnership with Champions for Wildlife, provides students with opportunities to engage in outdoor learning while studying the native species. The initiative allows students to observe and learn about box turtles in their natural habitat through hands-on environmental education.

Students also celebrated the opening of Polk Central Elementary’s new Literacy Trail, made possible through a grant from the Tryon Rotary Club. The trail is located behind the school and allows students to read books while walking the designated path.

The Literacy Trail combines physical activity with reading instruction, encouraging students to engage with literature in an outdoor classroom setting. The initiative supports both literacy development and physical wellness as part of the school’s educational programming.

Champions for Wildlife specializes in environmental education programs that connect students with local wildlife and conservation concepts. The organization provides interactive learning experiences designed to foster understanding of native species and their habitats.

The Tryon Rotary Club’s grant funding enabled the school to create the reading trail without requiring additional district resources. The community partnership demonstrates ongoing support for innovative educational initiatives at Polk Central Elementary.
