Polk Central kindergarten students explore apples through hands-on learning

Kindergarten students in Amber Styles’ class at Polk Central Elementary spent a recent school day exploring apples from just about every angle.

During Apple Day, students combined science, observation, creativity and a little cooking as they learned more about one of fall’s familiar fruits.

Students examined the parts of an apple, including the star-shaped chamber inside the core that holds its seeds. They also conducted an apple volcano experiment and compared red, yellow and green apples during a classroom taste test.

Red apples emerged as the class favorite.

The learning continued in the kitchen, where students worked together to make an apple pie. They ended the day by enjoying the finished pie with apple juice.

The activities gave students opportunities to learn by observing, experimenting, tasting and creating throughout the day.
