Second-grade students in Rachel Culbreth’s class at Polk Central Elementary School recently participated in a hands-on learning experience that connected literature to real-world application.
The students tasted cranberry sauce after completing their reading of “Cranberry Crop” during literacy group activities. The food tasting exercise served as an extension of the classroom reading assignment, allowing students to experience the subject matter through multiple senses.
The literacy activity demonstrates how educators at Polk Central Elementary integrate experiential learning with traditional reading instruction. Students engaged with the text on a deeper level by connecting the written content to a tangible experience.
“Cranberry Crop” provides students with information about cranberry cultivation and harvesting processes. The follow-up tasting activity reinforced the educational content while making the learning experience more memorable and engaging for young learners.
