Polk County Schools Pre-K programs earn prestigious 5-star license rating

Polk County Schools’ four elementary Pre-K programs have all achieved 5-Star license ratings through North Carolina’s Quality Rating and Improvement System, earning the highest level of quality recognition available from the state.

Tryon Elementary/Forbes Pre-K, Polk Central Elementary School Pre-K, Saluda Elementary School Pre-K and Sunny View Elementary School Pre-K each completed the rigorous QRIS assessment process and earned the top rating, reflecting exceptional early childhood education across the district.

The North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education oversees the state’s Quality Rating and Improvement System, which evaluates early childhood programs on staff education, program standards, learning environments and family engagement. Programs can earn between one and five stars, with five stars representing the highest level of quality.

“These ratings are a reflection of the outstanding work happening in our Pre-K classrooms every day,” said Lori Byars, preschool director. “Our teachers and staff are deeply committed to providing children with nurturing environments where they can grow academically, socially and emotionally.”

Achieving a 5-Star license reflects the dedication of teachers, teacher assistants, administrators and support staff who work daily to ensure young children receive high-quality early learning experiences. The rating recognizes classrooms that demonstrate strong instructional practices, developmentally appropriate learning environments and meaningful partnerships with families.

High-quality early childhood programs play a critical role in preparing children for success in kindergarten and beyond. Research consistently shows that children who attend strong early learning programs develop the skills needed for long-term academic achievement.

With all four elementary school sites earning the state’s top QRIS rating, Polk County Schools demonstrates its commitment to excellence in early childhood education. The district’s youngest learners begin their educational journey with the highest level of support, care and opportunity for success.
