Polk students tackle forensic science during AIG summer camp

Academically gifted students transformed into young forensic scientists this summer during a week-long “Crimebusters” Forensics Camp that combined hands-on laboratory work with mystery-solving scenarios.

The camp, part of the AIG Summer Seminars series and funded by the Polk County Community Foundation, provided students with real-world experience in forensic analysis through a series of interactive labs and investigations designed to build analytical thinking and laboratory skills.

A highlight of the program was a visit from NC BioNetwork, during which students completed a DNA analysis lab using gel electrophoresis. Participants extracted and compared DNA samples, mirroring the work of professional forensic analysts.

Throughout the week, campers investigated evidence using multiple forensic techniques, including fingerprinting, fiber analysis and blood typing. Each laboratory activity was designed to prepare students for complex mystery scenarios that challenged them to apply their newly acquired skills. Polk County Middle School science teacher Elisa Flynn led campers throughout the week.

The program concluded with plot-twisting mystery cases that kept participants engaged until the final solutions were revealed.
