Saluda Elementary fourth-graders step into history at Hart Square

Saluda Elementary School fourth-graders stepped back in time recently during a visit to Hart Square, where historic buildings and traditional crafts brought their Arts and Letters curriculum to life.

The educational field trip connected with students’ Module 3 studies, allowing them to experience history, culture and storytelling in a real-world setting. Hart Square, a historic village that shows how people lived and worked in the past, provided students with tangible connections to classroom learning about community, hard work and traditions.

During the visit, students explored old buildings, watched demonstrations of traditional crafts and learned about daily life in earlier eras. The hands-on experiences encouraged students to ask questions, make observations and think deeply about how history is preserved and shared through stories and artifacts.

The experiential learning helped students better understand themes from their readings while creating lasting memories that strengthen their grasp of Arts and Letters concepts.

The Polk County Community Foundation funded the field trip, enabling all fourth-grade students to participate in the hands-on learning experience beyond the classroom at no cost to families.
