Staff Spotlight: Brandi Roddy, Sunny View Elementary Teacher of the Year

A text message from a former student recently reminded Brandi Roddy why she teaches.

The 20-year-old’s words captured what Sunny View Elementary’s Teacher of the Year strives for every day in her first-grade classroom.

“To say you are an inspiration isn’t enough. You believed in me, helped me, and the fact that you still talk to me means the absolute world to me. I am so beyond grateful for you,” the former student wrote.

For Roddy, the message confirmed something profound.

“This text reminded me that I am right where God wants me to be,” Roddy said. “Teaching gives me the chance to make a difference, not just in academics, but in helping students feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving great things.”

Being chosen as Teacher of the Year by her colleagues holds special meaning for Roddy because the recognition comes from people who understand the dedication teaching requires.

“It means so much because it comes from the people who truly understand the challenges, dedication, and heart it takes to teach,” she said. “This recognition reminds me why I love what I do. It motivates me to keep growing, learning, and giving my best for our students and school community.”

In her first-grade classroom, Roddy focuses on helping students understand their potential and their ability to make a difference in the world.

“I want my students to learn that they are capable, important, and full of potential,” Roddy said. “I want them to leave my classroom being compassionate people who can make a difference in the world. More than anything, I want each child to leave my classroom knowing they are valued and loved.”

What sustains Roddy’s passion for teaching are the special daily moments with her students.

“Every day brings new moments of discovery, laughter, and connection,” she said. “Seeing their eyes light up when they understand something new or watching them grow in confidence reminds me why this work matters. They’re the reason I love what I do.”

The impact of Roddy’s teaching extends far beyond first grade, as evidenced by former students who still reach out years later. Her commitment to making every child feel valued and loved creates lasting impressions that shape lives long after students leave her classroom.
