Staff Spotlight: Brentley Harris

Brentley Harris has discovered that being a lead custodian means much more than traditional cleaning duties during his 20-year tenure at Saluda Elementary School.

Since joining the staff in 2004, Harris has embraced a role that combines indoor and outdoor responsibilities with unexpected challenges that keep every day interesting.

“I have been a custodian at Saluda since 2004. My job is a good mix between working inside and outside,” Harris said. “From the regular duties you would expect (sweeping, mopping, taking care of the grounds) to some you might not like changing a flat tire for a teacher, decorating the school for the different seasons, to projects that come up.

“There is never a dull moment.”

Harris views his position as essential to creating the optimal learning environment for students. His approach extends beyond maintenance tasks to include fostering a welcoming atmosphere throughout the school building and grounds.

“It is important to maintain a clean, safe, encouraging environment for the students. Also, I try to have a positive, friendly attitude,” Harris said.

The connection to Polk County Schools runs deep for Harris, who attended local schools for nine years before beginning his employment with the district while still in college. The familiarity with the community has strengthened his commitment to the school system.

“Polk County Schools is like home to me,” he said. “This is a great place to work. All of the staff are super friendly. Everyone works together to get the job done.”

Principal Erika Stronach noted Harris’s exceptional character and professional approach to his responsibilities.

“What makes Mr. Brentley truly special is his patience and kind-hearted, servant-minded spirit. I have never once heard him complain, grumble or speak an unkind word, no matter the request or circumstance,” Stronach said. “Mr. Brentley is a shining example of dedication and professionalism — a true model school employee.”

Harris’s two decades of service demonstrate the stability and commitment that contribute to Saluda Elementary’s positive school culture. His willingness to tackle diverse responsibilities while maintaining a positive attitude exemplifies the collaborative spirit that defines the school community.
