Leah Hudgens understands that student success begins the moment young people walk through the doors at Polk County High School. As the school’s receptionist, she serves as the first point of contact for students, families and visitors each day.
Hudgens focuses on creating a welcoming and safe environment where students feel valued from their first interaction with the school office. Her approach emphasizes the importance of small gestures that can have significant impact on a student’s day.
“As the receptionist, I support student success in ways that may not always be immediately visible but are very impactful. I aim to create a welcoming and safe environment where students feel valued from the moment they enter the office,” Hudgens said. “By greeting students with warmth and respect, I help set a positive tone for a successful school day.”
The receptionist role extends beyond administrative duties to include providing emotional support for students facing various challenges. Hudgens often assists students who come to the office feeling sick, anxious or uncertain about school procedures.
“I believe my role as the receptionist makes a difference by allowing me to be the first point of connection for students each day. Small gestures such as greeting a student by name or offering a word of encouragement help students feel like they belong at our school,” Hudgens said.
“Additionally, I feel that I make a difference by helping reduce stress for students who come to the office feeling sick, anxious, or unsure about what to do. By listening, staying calm and pointing them toward the right resources, I can help them resolve their concerns and return to class ready to learn.”
Hudgens appreciates the collaborative culture that defines Polk County Schools across all levels of the organization. She noted the district’s emphasis on relationships and mutual support among students, staff and families.
“What makes Polk County Schools community special to me is the sense of connection and care that runs through every part of the district. Students, staff, and families are all invested in one another’s success,” Hudgens said. “I appreciate how our community values relationships, supports one another and works together to ensure every student feels seen and encouraged. That close-knit, supportive spirit is what makes Polk County Schools such a meaningful place to be a part of.”
The receptionist position represents one of many support roles that contribute to the overall educational environment at Polk County High School. Staff members like Hudgens help create the foundation for student success through daily interactions and genuine care for student well-being.
