Second grade students at Sunny View Elementary School began their study of how life in the American West has changed over time with a visit Tuesday from a member of the Native Cherokee community.
Ray Smith, a member of the Native Cherokee community, spoke with students about Cherokee culture and traditions. Smith brought Native Cherokee artifacts to share with the class, providing students with tangible connections to the history they are studying.
The presentation opened the second graders’ unit study on the American West, offering students firsthand perspectives on Indigenous culture and historical experiences.
The visit provided students with opportunities to see authentic artifacts while learning directly from a member of the Cherokee community about traditions that have been passed down through generations.
