Sunny View Elementary fourth and fifth graders welcomed storyteller and musician John Thomas Fowler to the school this week for an arts experience combining stories and traditional mountain music.
Fowler has performed at numerous festivals, including the National Storytelling Festival, and has received awards for his work as a mountain musician.
During his visit, students had an opportunity to experience the traditions of oral storytelling and hear music performed on instruments including the banjo, harmonica, washboard and jaw harp.
The program gave students a chance to connect with forms of storytelling and music rooted in regional culture while learning directly from a working artist.
