Traditional music program brings community arts to Sunny View students

The Pacolet Junior Appalachian Musicians recently launched a satellite instruction program at Sunny View Elementary School, introducing students to traditional music through community participation.

PacJAM provides opportunities for area youth and adults to experience community connection through traditional music participation. The organization’s outreach represents an expansion of programming to serve rural elementary students.

Sunny View Elementary’s new performing arts program launched in its inaugural year with support from a Polk County Community Foundation grant. The initiative has created opportunities for student expression and individual growth through musical instruction.

Students receive weekly mandolin instruction at their school from Will Trakas and participate in enriching events at the Tryon Fine Arts Center. The foundation’s support has enabled comprehensive programming that extends beyond basic classroom instruction.

Program director Julie Moore plans to showcase student talents at upcoming PacJAM events and will collaborate with school administration to share program information with parents and staff members.

The partnership between PacJAM, Sunny View Elementary and the Polk County Community Foundation aims to expand opportunities for aspiring young artists in the rural school setting.
