Fourth-grade students from Tryon Elementary School recently visited Alexander Ford to experience the Overmountain Victory Trail, continuing their study of North Carolina’s role in the nation’s journey to independence.
During the field trip, students learned about the weapons used by British forces and Patriots during the Revolutionary War. They also explored the evolution of American flags, from colonial designs to the current national flag.
Students experienced hands-on learning about colonial life, including the types of clothing worn by colonists and the toys and games children played during that era.
The students learned about the significant Battle of Kings Mountain and walked on the same road that North Carolina militia traveled during the Revolutionary War period.
The Overmountain Victory Trail follows the route taken by Patriot militia members as they marched to the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780, a pivotal engagement in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War.
