Tryon Elementary School fifth graders will take their study of caves beyond the classroom this fall with a field trip to Linville Falls and Linville Caverns.
Teacher Khrista Simpson received a grant from the North Carolina Youth Outdoor Engagement Commission to support the Nov. 20 trip.
The experience will connect with students’ reading of “All Thirteen” by Christina Soontornvat, which tells the true story of the 2018 rescue of 12 young soccer players and their coach from a flooded cave in Thailand.
As students read the book, they will also learn more about cave systems and caverns. The field trip will give them an opportunity to connect that classroom learning with a firsthand look at geological formations and cave environments.
