Tryon students blend robotics, floats for joyous holiday parade

Students in J.J. Waddell’s class at Tryon Elementary School brought joy to life just before Christmas with a creative parade featuring handmade floats themed “Scenes of Joy.”

The project combined art, technology and literature to give students a unique hands-on learning experience.

The floats, designed to depict settings that bring joy to the students, reflected lessons on how settings influence characters’ emotions in realistic fiction. Each float was steered by a Lego robot programmed by the students, adding an interactive and technological element to the project. The robots also produced a variety of sounds, enhancing the display’s creativity and engagement.

The parade was a success, with enthusiastic first graders and proud parents lining up to watch the floats in action. The event showcased the students’ creativity and problem-solving skills while tying together lessons in literature, coding and design.
